Well it looks like Thanksgiving will be warm and sunny here in Texas and with that many people will be frying their turkeys tomorrow.
Fire related cooking incidents are very common and here are a few reminders to keep everyone safe:
-Remember to never overfill your deep fryer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to figure out the right amount of oil to add. TIP: PUT YOUR TURKEY IN THE POT with the OIL before you heat the oil to make sure you don't overflow the pot once you place in to fry. Once you know you have enough room then you can fry with more confidence.
- Protect your eyes, arms and hands (the handle and lid will become hot)
-Keep the deep fryer on a level and non-flammable surface such as a patio or driveway, at least 10 feet away from the house.
- Completely thaw (USDA says 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds) and dry turkey before cooking.
-Use caution when lowering the turkey in the fryer, the slower the better. TIP: Turn off the flame every time you raise and lower the turkey to provide an added level of safety. It doesn't take but a drip or 2 of oil hitting the flame to flare up the entire pot!
- Always keep a grease-fire-approved fire extinguisher nearby - just in case.
Wishing you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
We have also included a video to help you with these tips as well. (And yes beard length does determine the success of your fried turkey.)
